Take a look at your framed pieces. Is the art touching the glazing (glass or acrylic)? Are the mats faded or discolored? Is the art faded? Is the hanging hardware reliable? Where is your art hanging? Is it over or under a heating air conditioning vent? Is it subject to extreme lighting?
Your response to these questions could mean potential problems with your framing package. These problems could be damaging your art.
Custom picture framing techniques, materials and standards are continually changing. Framing artwork in an acid and lignin free environment is a relatively new concept. Framing done more than five years ago may have been done using acidic materials.
With that in mind, any framed artwork you have may be housed in an unfriendly environment. Framing is not intended to be permanent. Framed pieces should be checked every three to five years. Materials should be checked and replaced as necessary.
High Desert Art & Frame will examine your framed artwork to determine if changes are indicated. We will look to see how your artwork was mounted and the type of matboard used. We will check for acid migration. In addition, we will examine your glazing, frame construction and hanging mechanism for possible problems. Insects love paper - an examination of your artwork will determine if this is an issue.
Issues not addressed may result in harm to your artwork and decrease its value.
If your artwork has already undergone some damage, it may be necessary to refer you to a conservator. Then High Desert Art & Frame can re-frame your artwork so that you may enjoy it for many years to come.
Routine inspections of your artwork may save you heartache and expense down the road.
Everyday care of your artwork is also important. As with furniture, dusting is important. Care should be taken when cleaning the glass. ALWAYS lay the frame flat to clean the glass. Spray a lint-free cloth with cleaner to clean the glass. Do not allow any cleaner to seep under the frame. Regular glass cleaner should not be used on Acrylic. It should be cleaned with water mixed with a bit of mild dishwashing detergent. Acrylic is easily scratched, so use a soft cloth, not paper towel to clean.
